Our Mission
The HSN Centre for Prehospital Care fosters exceptional prehospital care to improve the health and wellbeing of our communities by supporting paramedics through:
innovative education delivery;
research;
responsive quality programming; and,
medical delegation and oversight consistent with approved standards and expert practices.
Health Sciences North Centre for Prehospital Care is an Ontario Base Hospital.
The Ministry of Health's base hospital program supports the ambulance system by providing medical oversight for the delivery of prehospital care. Base hospitals provide annual training and certification, while also overseeing controlled medical acts performed by paramedics. Base hospitals also provide quality assurance monitoring of the medical direction and patient care performed. Base hospital programs operate under a host hospital that has a signed performance agreement with the ministry. They are responsible for the delegation of controlled medical acts, training, and quality assurance of patient care provided by paramedics. A medical advisory committee comprised of regional base hospitals and other sector partners advises the ministry on matters related to ambulance-based prehospital patient care standards.
Health Sciences North was designated as a Base Hospital by the Ministry of Health in 1986. Our core functions include: online medical direction; certification and medical delegation at the level of Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) and Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP), a quality assurance program to ensure the safe delivery of prehospital care and medical education to 9 land ambulance services, and over 850 paramedics.
