The Trauma Program is an active participant in the Ontario Trauma Registry and Health Sciences North is one of only 11 hospitals in the province given Lead Trauma Hospital designation. As a trauma referral centre, Health Sciences North is able to abstract and contribute data which facilitates the reduction of trauma injury admissions and deaths via planning and evaluation of prevention programs, legislative changes and cost expenditures provincially.
The program provides core trauma education, such as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) to health care providers, and maintains an active quality assurance program. Clinical activities include chart reviews, patient and family interactions, ongoing communication with multidisciplinary care teams, quality improvement, research, injury prevention and administration.
